Netmax..... remember I had told you we were getting a 120 gl tank? My
husband wanted me to ask if you by chance would know the weight when filled?
Is it 3 lbs per gl of water?
We are going to try and set it up in the next few days, but we are trying to
figure the best place in the house, I was going to put it where I have my 55
gl, which also has a 29 gl and a 10 gl below it, but I guess since the
weight is spread out between three tanks it would not be the same thing...
I know you said put it the opposite way the supports go, and he is going to
reinforce with a "T" below it ....in the basement. Any web pages or anything
I can get info?
thanks Nikki

Water is 8.33 lbs. per gal., so 120 gals. would be just under 1000 lbs.
plus the weight of the tank, stand, gravel and rocks.......... frank

It's easier in metric. IIRC, one litre pure water is 1 kilogram at 25C.

Because a kilo is about 2.1 pounds and a gallon about 4 litres, then a
gallon of water should be around 8-9 pounds. The old aquarium kid's
books long ago said 10 pounds per gallon - just to be safe.

1 gallon is about 3.8l, so you are talking about 120*3.8=450kg for
freshwater just for the water.
Add tank, gravel, rocks, stand, ... and we are talking 500-550kg.

> Is it 3 lbs per gl of water?

I doubt it. Aviation gasolin is calculated at 6 pounds per gallon, water
surely has a higher specific weight than gasolin.

BTW: if you want to find out the specific weight of water in your units then
why not pick a one-gallon jug (e.g from milk), fill it with water, and put
it on your kitchen scale? That's accurate enough for your purposes.

Yep, i was just talking to him about it the other day, so i was saying
"remember i had told you"

I looked it up on that link someone sent, it was close to 1,300 lbs, with
out the stand, they ask about type of water, rocks, size of tank, its pretty
cool

yeah, i had thought i heard 3lbs a gl, and my husband said no i dont think
so, so i was hoping someone would say yes so i could tell him i was right,
lol, its kind of important our house is older and that is good in some ways
and in others its not, we are still deciding were to put it, right now its a
living room decoration (right smack in the middle of the living room)

Yeah, we did figure out what it was, but he needed to figure out how much it
would be all together, with everything else, i was suprised how heavy it
is, that web page above it pretty neat, you put your tanks size, rocks, ect,
and it tells you how much weight it is.

I used to figure a gallon (US) at 8 pounds 5 ounces. If you add
gravel, plants etc the idea of 10 pounds per gallon is pretty close.

Unless you got a concrete slap as floor this is the worst possible location
because the beam have to support the longest possible span. Alongside a
load-bearing wall spanning across multiple floor joists is the best.

> apparently salt water and fresh water are different weights????

Well, sure. You are adding 3.5% of salt. That's some weight, too.

I was joking....It's sitting in the middle of my floor because when my
husband brought it in the house.... that is were he set it, its not full, so
I don't think I need no concrete just yet....He is a man it will be there
for a few days....he works 72 hours a week, so it may be a week, to be
honest I think he did it on purpose so I could not fill it before he secured
it...he knows me to well
Nik
It would look pretty funny set up in the middle of my living room, i have
three kids it would not last long.

Close. It's at 4 degrees, not 25. But for all practical purposes it doesn't
matter.
And to be very nit-picky: 1 kg is just the mass. But what you actually need
is the force that is excerted on the floor. And on earth that would be 9.8
Newton. But nobody is using that, of course.

My new one sat in the middle of the Conservatory for at least 4 weeks
before anything happened to it....It did give me the advantage of having
plenty of time to plan what I wanted to do with it though :-)

Do you have any salt water tanks? I was thinking it would be really pretty,
I would have to do a lot of reading, I don't know how much different the
equipment is from fresh to salt.
I just spent 20 min. looking for the tape measure, I think my husband hid
it, I don't know what he thinks I can do.
someone ask what the stand measured in another post last week
tank
front/back 18.5 inch
top/bottom 22 inch
long 72 inch
--------
stand
73 long
20 front/back
24 top/bottom
its a wood stand reinforced on the inside with ply wood
got to go get the kids from school, hope every one is having a nice day

Sounds about the same size as mine is....No, I don't have any saltwater
tanks - I did consider it once but decided that the work involved wasn't
for me so set up a Malawi tank instead (very colourful but freshwater).
Of our regulars I think Roy runs some saltwater tanks - the
rec.aquaria.marine.* newsgroups might be a good place to lurk if you are
considering it.

Been thinking about it, i think i am going to have to go to a big fish place
and check out some fish, i would like something colorful, I wanted to do a
saltwater in a 39 long i have but i read it would be hard because you want
something bigger, so i was thinking about the new one, i guess i will have
to check it out and see how *hard* it is, I dont want to get in over my
head, maybe i'll find something else, my husband wants cichlids
